Father’s affirmation came before “performance”. Any performance was to be driven by the Spirit of Sonship that had been imparted along with the declaration. Now, the installation of the Sonship Operating Platform would begin.
The Spirit could have taken Jesus anywhere desired. The Spirit could have taken Jesus directly into town among the masses to perform signs, wonders and miracles. Jesus could have been led into the synagogue or the dwellings of sinners to preach soul rousing sermons.
It was simply not to be the order of things!
Rather, the Spirit took him into the wilderness for a 40 day fast and spiritual warfare battle with Satan.
I wonder what Jesus was thinking about during that period of time? What was he doing out there in wilderness for over a month?
He was installing the Operating Platform of Sonship!
The ONLY thing he had heard before being taken into the crucible of testing and trial was, “This is my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased!” You might think that having such an experience would bring an impact on him; especially since it was his destiny and purpose for being in the earth.
In the wilderness, he was denying the flesh and the nature he had come to be clothed in. He would not allow the fleshly nature to serve as the impetus of his operation and function. As the Son, well pleasing to the Father, he would trust in, rely on and only function according to the Spirit, because, after all, God is Spirit and must be worshiped in Spirit and Truth.
So, at his weakest moment, the Adversary comes to him. The first words out of his mouth to entice Jesus were,…………………..wait for it………………………..
“IF you be the Son of God……” Satan was up to the same old tricks he had utilized in the garden of Eden with Adam and Eve. Satan was questioning and trying to slander that which Father had spoken to His Son. And, he was after the truth that Jesus had heard directly from Father’s mouth. He wanted Jesus to doubt that which had been declared.
And, notice, Satan wanted Jesus to “perform”. “If you be the Son of God, command these stones to be made bread.”
Jesus was hungry! His physical body according to natural laws required food! He had not eaten in 40 days. However, he would not move in his own ability to meet his own needs! (Just let that sink in for a minute! In biblical terms, this is a “selah” moment)
This is the Son’s response:
“It has been written, Man shall not live and be upheld and sustained by bread alone, but by every word that comes forth from the mouth of God.“
Do you see what had been installed? Do you see what governed his mentality? Do you realize what would serve as the basis of his operation? The word that came forth from God’s mouth.
“You are my Son. I am well pleased.” For 40 days, he removed from him everything that would deny this truth of God in his life. And, in his moment of greatest weakness, when he was tempted to act on his own in order to preserve himself…………………..he chose to trust in his Father’s provision so that the Father would be glorified!!
Next, we will discuss the temptations further and actually discover one of the main programs which operates on the Sonship platform!
