Jesus operated according to the Spirit of Sonship. The disruption he caused by functioning in this manner during his 3 years or so of public ministry did not set well with the religious order of the day.
There were many times where he had discourse with the scribes and Pharisees that clearly delineated their opposing perspectives. One such exchange is found in John, chapter 8. It is a classic picture of the Operating Platform of Sonship against the servant function of the old order.
Jesus: “Yes, I know that you are Abraham’s offspring; yet you plan to kill Me, because My word has no entrance (makes no progress, does not find any place) in you.
I tell the things which I have seen and learned at My Father’s side, and your actions also reflect what you have heard and learned from your father.”
They retorted, “Abraham is our father.”
Jesus said, “If you were truly Abraham’s children, then you would do the works of Abraham [follow his example, do as Abraham did].
But now, instead, you are wanting and seeking to kill Me, a Man Who has told you the truth which I have heard from God. This is not the way Abraham acted. You are doing the works of your [own] father.”
They said to Him, “We are not illegitimate children and born out of fornication; we have one Father, even God.”
Jesus said to them, ” If God were your Father, you would love Me and respect Me and welcome Me gladly, for I proceeded (came forth) from God [out of His very presence]. I did not even come on My own authority or of My own accord (as self-appointed); but He sent Me.”
It is clear from Jesus’ statements that Sonship functions by submission to the Source of Life from which someone originates.
Though it bore God’s name, the existing religious order of the day actually submitted to a particular source………………….Satan was their father. (Don’t get mad at me………..Jesus said it!) The religious leaders surmised that Abraham was their father. And through Abraham, they even went so far as to declare that God was their Father. They were deceived. Jesus made it plain. They did not act the way Abraham did in the past or the way he would if here were here in Jesus time! Their function came from submission to a different source and Jesus readily identified it for them. Their function actually stood in opposition to God’s purposes being fulfilled in the earth and resisted His Kingdom.
This was the reason for the disruptions Jesus brought. He was from a different Source. And, he was fully submitted to that Source for all of his function and operation. As a consequence of their submission to their source, he knew that the religious leaders wanted to kill him.
This wasn’t a news flash to Jesus! He was aware of his personal destiny and purpose. He was aware of the eternal peace plan where it was determined that the “lamb was slain before the foundation of the world.” He knew that the Life he lived simply qualified him for the death he was to die. He was cognizant of what that death would accomplish AND he knew what would happen on the other side of death.
In the Spirit of Sonship, Jesus had declared publicly, ‘My food is, that I may do the will of Him who sent me, and may finish His work; (John 4:34)
Hebrews 10 states that Jesus came into the world saying, “You (God) don’t want sacrifices and offerings year after year; you’ve prepared a body for me for a sacrifice. It’s not fragrance and smoke from the altar that whet your appetite. So I said, “I’m here to do it your way, O God, the way it’s described in your Book.” When he said, “You don’t want sacrifices and offerings,” he was referring to practices according to the old plan. When he added, “I’m here to do it your way,” he set aside the first in order to enact the new plan—God’s way.
So, he is taken to the place of pressing. In Gethsemane, we see his entire humanity activated in gut-wrenching turmoil as he prayed. His soul is grievous to the point of death. His body is so tense that it perspires drops of blood and eventually, angels come to strengthen his spirit. Their he is as a Man; spirit, soul and body. All capacities functioning according to the Spirit of Sonship with the focus on his will submitting to the Father’s will.
Notice the words of his prayer: “Father, if You are willing, remove this cup from Me; yet not My will, but [always] Yours be done.”
The Spirit of Sonship is personified by the submission of the son’s will to the Father’s will and the son trusting the Father, even in death, for resurrection.
As the Son, Jesus reveals that a true son can only accomplish this level of operation by knowing Father as the Source of his life and must willingly lay down his own life, in order to receive/enter the Father’s Life. This Operating Platform of Sonship is the Way in which Father’s purposes are fulfilled in the earth.
