“If ye will obey My voice, and keep My covenant, ye shall be unto Me a kingdom of priests.”
The entire nation was to steward the oracles of God. The entire nation was to serve as the channel through which God’s knowledge and blessing were to be effectively communicated to the world. God determined that through this Nation of Priests, all nations were to be blessed.
Priesthood in the first covenant was simply to be a picture to help them (and eventually, us) apprehend the coming Priesthood of His own Son, who would also serve as the Mediator of the New Covenant.
Similar to Israel at that time, God fully intends now that all believers operating according to the New Covenant to function as a royal priesthood.
The undeniable, immutable privilege and responsibility of function as a Priest before our God is a central component in every child of God appropriating their inheritance. With it comes the great joy of peace and unobstructed access to God, the duty and power of mediating for humanity and being God’s channel of blessing to them, all according to the grace of The Great High Priest.
Yet, the majority of God’s children are absolutely powerless to enter into and exercise their priestly functions. The basis of their ineffectiveness is, first and foremost, their lack of accurately understanding God’s grace displayed through the New Covenant.
Though there is afforded total access to the One, True, Living God, who is their Father, most believers put the emphasis on “ministry” as being “man-ward”. However, before we ever reach “man-ward”, New Covenant priests should fully exercise all rights and privileges to the Throne.
As our example, Jesus functioned in this manner. From his baptism, the Spirit drove him into the wilderness where he dealt with Father as High Priest. All temptations suffered in the wilderness experience had to do with his function as a priest. (another topic for another day) But the main benefit of his function of priesthood “God-ward” in the wilderness, was the total stripping of any flesh involved in his “doing” ministry man-ward.
He returned from the presence of the Father, “in the power of the Holy Spirit” and sat in the synagogue and declared, “the Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because He has anointed me to………” do the corresponding actions that would accomplish Father’s purposes in the earth!
This would forever serve as his modus operandi in “ministry man-ward”. He would say, “I don’t say anything unless I have heard the Father say it.” and “I don’t do anything unless I have seen the Father do it.”
What matters in genuine ministry “man-ward” is not where you are sent and what you do but rather, Who sent you and Who empowers you to do. Our greatest asset in “ministry” is not our teaching gift, singing, (fill in the blank) and it is certainly not our personality and/or charisma. Genuine Ministry is God-ward and exercising fully our total, complete, unhindered access to the one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all. Then, and only then, are we capable of rendering an accurate representation of the One who is our Source and finish the work of the One Who sent us.
