The Love of the Brethren = Awesome!

imageLove, let it be without hypocrisy. Look with loathing and horror upon that which is pernicious. Stick fast to that which is good. In the sphere of brotherly love have a family affection for one another, vying with one another in showing honor; (Romans 12:9-10; Wuest Expanded Translation)

And this commandment we have from him, [namely], The one who is constantly loving God should constantly be loving also loving his brother. (I John 4:21; Wuest Expanded Translation)

The more I see the Body of Christ revealed, the more I marvel at the majesty of the Head’s glory and the Father’s Wisdom.

For several years, my wife and I struggled along this journey with just a few brothers and sisters who were close to us in heart and spirit.  At the time, we didn’t realize that we were all becoming family.  Yet, as we walked through things together and came out the other side them, Father fused our lives, hearts and spirits together in Christ as One Spirit.

Then, as communities started to be birthed and established locally, regionally and nationally, we saw the same DNA of His Love connect us in unprecedented ways with precious people.  Father has seen fit not to allow us to organize anything in an “official” way.  Family just seems to flow based upon Love, mutual submission to one another and to the Father of us all.  It’s his House and we are blessed to be at home………in whatever city or state we may be in at the time.  It’s awesome!

I had an elder brother call me today from 3 states over.  He expressed to me, “I feel at home when I am with you.  We can just be ourselves and that’s such a joy.”

I didn’t let him know it, but, as he was expressing those word to me, I teared up a bit.  I returned the sentiment and, in the moment, I was so blessed and encouraged.  It may seem like a small thing. I tell you, it is not.

You see, in dealing with situations that crop up between brothers from time to time, I get to see those “pernicious” things that Paul warned against in Romans 12.  Pernicious means  having a harmful effect, esp. in a gradual or subtle way.  It never ceases to amaze me how petty and fleshly we can be to the detriment of our brothers spiritual well being and the unity of the Body.

While we are instructed to to stick fast to that which is good and literally compete in order to honor one another, sometimes, the situation is exacerbated by a brother who will not, in any way, choose to see the other side of the matter and stick to his guns regardless of the outcome.  It isn’t a pretty thing to see when brothers NEED to be RIGHT rather than pursue BEING RIGHTEOUS in working to keep the unity of the Spirit.

When it happens and I am made aware of it and, sometimes asked to get involved, I don’t particularly enjoy it.  I do not like nor enjoy conflict.  I reckon that is one of the reasons I get to do it.

In any case, today I was dealing with just such a situation and had determined what course of action I would take in addressing the matter.  I was troubled from the time I woke up this morning all the way through most of the day. I was unsettled to say the least.  Then, an amazing thing happened.  I had brothers from ALL over start contacting me.

Words of encouragement. Sharing wisdom.  Affirming their love for me.  Giving sound counsel. Every bit of it cleared my head and spirit, redirected my course and instilled peace in me.  Man, it was a beautiful thing!

Most of them had no idea of what was transpiring. They just felt led to reach out and contact me.  By the end of the afternoon, I was in my joy place again and knew Father would handle misbehaving brothers as only He can…………it’s His Household.

So, perhaps you can understand why I say that I marvel as I see the Family revealed and function.  It surpasses all that I could ever imagine and it only gets better and more potent. For the life of me, I can’t understand why someone wouldn’t want to be involved in such a glorious expression and abandon everything in order to do so.

Life is short!  But, we’ve been seeded with Everlasting Life and the sooner we realize that our brothers carry Life too and that “every joint supplies that which we have need of” …….. well, the sooner we will let go of the petty, fleshly, temporal things that don’t really matter and serve only to obstruct His Life flow.

Keep your peace!

  1. 1 John 4:16-21

    King James Version (KJV)

16 And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him.

17 Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as he is, so are we in this world.

18 There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.

19 We love him, because he first loved us.

20 If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen?

21 And this commandment have we from him, That he who loveth God love his brother also.

  2. The small, simple, practical acts of sharing the seemingly little things Father places in us for the moment somehow manifests as beautiful, meaniful impressions of His love!
